VICAR image processing system guide to system use

    Get PDF
The functional characteristics and operating requirements of the VICAR (Video Image Communication and Retrieval) system are described. An introduction to the system describes the functional characteristics and the basic theory of operation. A brief description of the data flow as well as tape and disk formats is also presented. A formal presentation of the control statement formats is given along with a guide to usage of the system. The guide provides a step-by-step reference to the creation of a VICAR control card deck. Simple examples are employed to illustrate the various options and the system response thereto

Satellite remote sensing facility for oceanograhic applications

    Get PDF
The project organization, design process, and construction of a Remote Sensing Facility at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at LaJolla, California are described. The facility is capable of receiving, processing, and displaying oceanographic data received from satellites. Data are primarily imaging data representing the multispectral ocean emissions and reflectances, and are accumulated during 8 to 10 minute satellite passes over the California coast. The most important feature of the facility is the reception and processing of satellite data in real time, allowing investigators to direct ships to areas of interest for on-site verifications and experiments

    k-core organization of complex networks

We analytically describe the architecture of randomly damaged uncorrelated networks as a set of successively enclosed substructures -- k-cores. The k-core is the largest subgraph where vertices have at least k interconnections. We find the structure of k-cores, their sizes, and their birth points -- the bootstrap percolation thresholds. We show that in networks with a finite mean number z_2 of the second-nearest neighbors, the emergence of a k-core is a hybrid phase transition. In contrast, if z_2 diverges, the networks contain an infinite sequence of k-cores which are ultra-robust against random damage.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

A requirements engineering and management training course for software development professionals

    Get PDF
Devising a course for software professionals working in industry depends on several factors. In order to create a course that fulfils professionals’ expectations, it is important to take account of the skills of the participants, the time available, and the specific topics to be covered. This paper presents the curriculum of a course in requirements engineering and management intended for software developers with a first-level academic degree in computing and experience in developing real software solutions. This context requires the course to concentrate on topics that were not taught in the participants’ previous education and that can have a positive impact on their daily practices

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in myosin-binding protein C (MYBPC3) Icelandic founder mutation carriers

Objective: The myosin-binding protein C (MYBPC3) c.927-2A>G founder mutation accounts for >90% of sarcomeric hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in Iceland. This cross-sectional observational study explored the penetrance and phenotypic burden among carriers of this single, prevalent founder mutation. Methods: We studied 60 probands with HCM caused by MYBPC3 c.927-2A>G and 225 first-degree relatives. All participants underwent comprehensive clinical evaluation and relatives were genotyped. Results: Genetic and clinical evaluation of relatives identified 49 genotype-positive (G+) relatives with left ventricular hypertrophy (G+/LVH+), 59 G+without LVH (G+/LVH−) and 117 genotype-negative relatives (unaffected). Compared with HCM probands, G+/ LVH+ relatives were older at HCM diagnosis, had less LVH, a less prevalent diastolic dysfunction, fewer ECG abnormalities, lower serum N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I levels, and fewer symptoms. The penetrance of HCM was influenced by age and sex; specifically, LVH was present in 39% of G+males but only 9% of G+females under age 40 years (p=0.015), versus 86% and 83%, respectively, after age 60 (p=0.89). G+/LVH− subjects had normal wall thicknesses, diastolic function and NT-proBNP levels, but subtle changes in LV geometry and more ECG abnormalities than their unaffected relatives. Conclusions: Phenotypic expression of the Icelandic MYBPC3 founder mutation varies by age, sex and proband status. Men are more likely to have LVH at a younger age, and disease manifestations were more prominent in probands than in relatives identified via family screening. G+/LVH− individuals had subtle clinical differences from unaffected relatives well into adulthood, indicating subclinical phenotypic expression of the pathogenic mutation

Professional learning for Islamic education teachers in the UAE

© 2020 Christian Education. Islamic education (IE) is currently receiving increased attention and undergoing major changes at the international level. A few studies have investigated the structured professional development programmes provided to IE teachers. However, the area of autonomous IE teacher professional learning continues to be under-researched. Based on Al-Zarnuji\u27s framework of lifelong learning, the authors interviewed IE teachers to investigate the practices, attitudes, and influencing factors regarding IE teacher professional learning in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This study shows that IE teachers are eager to engage in teacher-driven learning experiences. The directions for the IE teachers’ intended growth are mainly influenced by contemporary advancements in the field of education. The findings of this study highlight how IE teachers’ professional learning capitalises on the Islamic concept of lifelong learning and thereby opens a promising route for their effective growth to meet the high demand for skilled IE teachers in the UAE
